About

Helwing Villamizar (Caracas, 1974) is a Venezuelan artist based in New York whose work explores the intersections between personal history, geopolitical forces, and knowledge systems through various media. His work, characterized by intricate palimpsest drawings, abstract decalcomania paintings, and 'objects of resistance', is rooted in a process of layering and reconfiguration that connects digital and traditional media. Villamizar investigates the self as a mutable structure, both shaped by and in defiance of established ideological frameworks. Inspired by Venezuela's sociopolitical shifts and a transnational, religious upbringing that spans center and periphery, Villamizar constructs visual and conceptual spaces where historical sedimentation, poetic rebellion, and emergent group dynamics converge in a critical dialogue about representation and agency within the contemporary cultural landscape. His trajectory includes participation in major international biennials and group exhibitions, highlighting his participation in the International Contemporary Art Biennial/ULA 2022 and 2010, as well as politically charged performative actions in 2017. Beyond his artistic practice, Villamizar extends his role as a creator into domains beyond cultural production as founder of TalkApps.dev, developing innovative micro-application solutions for business operations and creative projects.
